Impro ansambl MAS

Impro ansambl MAS was founded in the 2017/2018 academic year at the Department of Composition of the Academy of Music, University of Sarajevo, as part of the elective course Free Improvisation in Composition. Since the 2022/2023 academic year, the course has been compulsory for fourth-year students of instrumental departments and composition, while students in earlier years of study can take the elective course Introduction to Free Improvisation in Composition.

The ensemble operates as a collective of current and former students of the course, focusing on developing real-time composition skills, exploring the relationships between sound, gesture, and form, and fostering creative thinking and collective musical interaction. Within the ensemble, students develop contemporary compositional techniques and methods, improve their instrumental technique, intonation, and analytical listening skills, and cultivate musical intelligence.

Impro ansambl MAS has over 60 alumni, 15 of whom are currently actively involved in the ensemble, alongside more than 20 current students.

The ensemble's founder and artistic director is composer and flutist Assistant Professor Dr. Hanan Hadžajlić. The concert producer is musicologist Aida Adžović, MA.

Impro ansambl MAS has performed as part of the festival productions SONEMUS New Generation (2025, 2024) and SONEMUS Fest: PRO/A̵G̵/GRESSION (2022), as well as interdisciplinary exhibitions in collaboration with students of the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Sarajevo: Dimensional Drift (2025) and Deeya (2023). Since 2018, Impro ansambl MAS has presented annual concerts produced by the Academy of Music, University of Sarajevo, through which it has developed its own concert format and aesthetic identity. Notable recent projects include Pierrot 21 (2025), Contrapunctus XIV (2024), and Kaleidoscope (2023). As part of international academic cooperation, the ensemble performed a concert with visiting students of the CEEPUS programme (2026) and held the First Improvisation Competition – Impro ansambl MAS Solo Improvisation Award (2026).
